General Requirements & Entry Specs

1. All submissions must be accompanied by an application form and mailed to MediaRights, 104 West 14th Street, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10011.

2. Projects must address an important contemporary social issue such as: Sustainable Agriculture, Criminal Justice, Economic Justice, the Environment, Family & Society, Gay/Lesbian Issues, Gender/Women, Health/Health Advocacy, Human Rights, Immigration, International Issues, Media Reform, Politics/Government, Racial Justice, Religious Freedom, Youth Activism and more.

3. All films, videos and digital stories must be 8 minutes or shorter. Web-based new media pieces can be any length.

4. Submissions can be any genre: Documentary, Narrative, Comedy, Experimental, Animation, Public Service Announcement, Digital Story, Music Video, Game, Interactive Online Project.

5. Youth-produced submissions are welcome and will be considered for all awards.

6. We are interested in projects that are innovative in both content and style. We are especially interested in media that ties into the efforts of activists and nonprofits to promote social change.

7. Entries must have cleared all copyrighted material and have releases from all relevant parties. This is very important.

8. All submissions must be available for broadcast, online streaming and DVD distribution. In other words, submissions cannot be under exclusive contractual agreement with another entity barring them from inclusion in any facet of the Media That Matters Film Festival.

9. We especially welcome submissions that are premieres (broadcast, streaming, festival, national).

10. There is a limit of 2 submissions per applicant.

11. Preview tapes MUST be in VHS NTSC or DVD format only. No PAL format and no MiniDV tapes please. Any PAL or MiniDV tapes that are submitted will be considered ineligible. New media work must be submitted on CD or if the project is Web-based, a URL must be provided.

12. Tapes will not be returned.

13. Please send a full press kit if available including still photographs and any related educational materials.

14. The fee for submissions is $20 (checks payable to Arts Engine, Inc.). Youth/Student submissions are FREE — you must provide proof that you are a student by sending in a photocopy of your dated school ID or an official letter from your school administration indicating your enrollment.
