DocuClub Screenings: Parting the Waters

DocuClub is holding its May screening on Wednesday, May 27, at 7 p.m., at the beautiful new theater facilities of the 92YTribeca, located at 200 Hudson Street (at Canal). You can take the E, 1, or 6 trains to Canal.

Our moderator will be Yance Ford. Ford is Series Producer of P.O.V and has been instrumental in curating the acclaimed documentary film series on PBS for seven years. She works closely with P.O.V.’s executive director to evaluate films submitted to P.O.V., oversees P.O.V.’s annual call for entries, and coordinates P.O.V.’s annual programming advisory board. Privately, Ford is a Programming Associate, Documentary Features for the Sundance Film Festival and serves on the IFW Advisory Committee. She is also a consultant and pre-screener for the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, True/False, and Newport International Film Festival among others. She has served on juries at Full Frame, Silverdocs, and ITVS, appeared on panels at True/False,  Sunny Side of the Doc and mentored emerging filmmakers at the NALIP Producer’s Academy. A graduate of Hamilton College and the production workshop at Third World Newsreel, Ford is currently in development on her first film, a documentary film about race and murder in the suburbs of New York City.

We are excited to be screening Parting The Waters co-directed and co-produced by Josh Waletzky and longtime DocuClub member Jenny Levison. Despite the fact that swimming pools have been racially integrated for over fifty years, two thirds of black and Latino children still can’t swim. Parting the Waters follows African-American Olympic swimmers Maritza Correia and Cullen Jones, and three talented young black and Latino swimmers coming up behind them, in a fish-out-of water story that takes place in the water. Josh Waletzky, Director, Editor and Co-Producer, is a highly acclaimed documentary filmmaker who has made dozens of films that probe deep into the lives of people caught in social and cultural crossroads. His extensive body of documentary work includes Academy Award-nominated Music For The Movies: Bernard Herrmann, Image Before My Eyes, Partisans Of Vilna, Sacred Stage: The Marinsky Theater, and Shaker Heights: Struggle For Integration.

Producer, Co-Director and Writer Jenny Levison is a screenwriter, playwright, and filmmaker who specializes in the use of arts media in social justice organizing. Her writing and production credits include the CD of Mexican and Mexican American labor music, Nuestras Voces Se Levantan Para la Justicia; the musical theater work Shtil, Mayn Corazon- A Yiddish Tango Cabaret; the documentary films Niel and Phil and Live Free or Dye; and the satiric media campaign Billionaires for Bush (or Gore).
