Talk Back # 9: Third World Newsreel Production Workshop

Anthology Film Archives was the site of last night’s DocuClub screening. We partnered with film distributor Third World Newsreel to present the work of the participants in its Production Workshop. Three short docs were screened: Beyond the Music by Lottie Porch and Vanara Taing, PRIMETIME: Fighting Back Against Foreclosure by Jennifer Fasulo and Manauvaskar Kublall, and Glitter in the Hood: Gentrification in Brooklyn by Nuala Cabral, Thanushka Yakupitiyage and Jaisal Noor. Moderating the post screening feedback was award-winning television producer Desireena Almoradie.

Playing to a packed theater, the shorts went over very well. The audience was clearly invested in the subject matter explored in all three pieces. Most of the comments were for each the films was a request for more contextual information whether it was the geographical location of the church in Beyond the Music, or more detailed information about the Atlantic Yards real estate project in Glitter in the Hood.

Let’s open up the discussion for further thoughts for the filmmakers.
