Do you know where North Kivu is?
If you don’t know North Kivu, you’ll probably start hearing a lot about it. Peace treaties failed in October and violence has again erupted in this region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. We are currently making a film called Rose & Nangabire, a story of survival and a powerful call for peace in Congo. Rose Mapendo, the subject of the film, has become a leading advocate for reconciliation between Hutus and Tutsis, and has made her way from a prison camp over a decade ago to center stage in the international effort to find a lasting peace.
I was at a United Nations event yesterday announcing a campaign to raise awareness and financial support for North Kivu. Ben Affleck was there with Rose, along with Pierre Bertrand of the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR). Ben was knowledgeable and specific in his responses, but it was Rose who carried the day when she made a direct appeal to women in the audience to come together for peace. She’s a tremendous activist. I can’t wait for Rose & Nangabire to be done so that you can see it. In the meantime, check out Ben Affleck’s call to action.
