New Arts Policy Talk
Today’s New York Times highlights the role that the arts and art organizations may play in the Obama Administration’s economic recovery plans (Arts Leaders Urge Role for Culture in Economic Recovery).
The lobbying organization Americans for the Arts has been active in making a case for increased funding of the arts, particularly through existing entities such as the National Endowment for the Arts.
And Jeremy McCarter wrote an interesting essay in Newsweek,
Will Act for Food, a couple of weeks ago urging the Obama Administration to embrace the arts fully – but steers clear of recommending a cabinet-level Secretary of the Arts position, as has been suggested prominently by Quincy Jones. As McCarter puts it: “the arts don’t need another superintendent in Washington—- they need an evangelist.”
It’s worth noting that few of the prominent arts proposals include references to any of the media arts (film, television, radio, video, new media)—- or the many intersections of art with technology, such as online video.
There are solid opportunities for new job creation in the media arts, which could dovetail nicely with Obama’s expressed interest in information technology development.
Here at Arts Engine, as well as at NAMAC, we’ve been brainstorming about how it might work but the ideas need more national traction and solid partnerships outside of a few key players. Let me know if you’ve come across any interesting suggestions on jobs in the arts or independent media – either your own ideas or someone else’s – that might help flesh out this idea.
