Americans for Zoos, Pools and Golf Unite!
Last week we received the good news that the National Endowment for the Arts would, in fact, receive $50 million in the stimulus bill that President Obama signed this week. This was, in large part, thanks to a lot of people writing letters to their respective legislators. Americans for the Arts reported that at least 85,000 letters went in. Symbolically, it’s big. But it’s still crazy that such a small amount of money had to be fought over. Loosely speaking, it’s only $1 million per state, hardly enough to stimulate a sketch of a senatorial chuff. Senator Tom Corburn (R-OK), now famous for his stance against art, added a lovely bit of incoherence to the debate that became a rallying cry for anyone looking to keep the money in. Here it is, hilariously, and word for word: no stimulus funding can be used for “any casino or other gambling establishment, aquarium, zoo, golf course, swimming pool, stadium, community park, museum, theater, art center, and highway beautification project.”
