Creative Class-ism
During the whole stimulus debate the idea that the arts are an economic force was given short shrift. Senator John McCain practically snorted when he asked how art creates any significant number of jobs. A recent article in Crain’s makes it pretty clear for New York that creative jobs are vital. The changes that are now racing through the system will affect 78,000 people here. Meanwhile Michigan has developed a refreshingly coherent approach to jobs in film, one I particularly like because it demonstrates the great value that so many community colleges provide. Question: How is it possible that creative industries are not considered a critical economic pillar of our culture in 2009? Can anyone help me out? I’m flummoxed.
