Yes, the above definition describes what an intern is. On the other hand that isn’t how I would describe my short but fruitful time as an intern with Arts Engine.
From literally the first day I was given the freedom to just, write. That freedom is something that, whether I made it known to my co-workers or not, I am extremely grateful for. I learned all about html and email blasts (the recoil of which may not be all that dissimilar from that of a shotgun blast). I also did my fair share of editing.
Still, the most important thing I learned was the art of choosing what to write about; stories that I thought people would want to read. From idea to research to finished article there was support and trust, and that, I think, is exactly what a young journalist needs. Also, they never sent me out for coffee. So farewell Arts Engine. Not forever, just for now.
