Friendlier Than a Manifesto
I just read the speech that Jon Reiss made in Copenhagen about the crisis in distribution. It’s great! It’s a manifesto! He’s really clear and thoughtful about distribution. He doesn’t pretend he’s found the solution, which I really appreciate. He simply lays down some facts and some suggestions. I think manifestos are sort of funny, but I still like the speech. Come to think of it, this felt more like a fireside chat than a manifesto. It’s a bit friendlier than a manifesto.
If I were free, I’d head over to IFC tonight and hear him in person. I especially liked his “Take Back the Theatrical” part. He has a new book out called Think Outside the Box Office, which makes me think of how great Rooftop Films is. Film everywhere! For everyone! Though I agree in general about his “Digital Rights” section, he misses an opportunity to talk about alternative rights ideas, like Creative Commons. He sort of hints at it, but doesn’t embrace it as one method among many. That said, his ideas feel quite optimistic about the future of film distribution without being naive. Nice one, Jon!
