Happy Pride!
Not even the hot, humid New York Summer in late June could keep happy and proud gay folks from strolling down Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue yesterday. Special kudos to the Peruvian contingent and their amazing, colorful bird costumes!
PFLAG is always a warm, welcome presence as well. Refresh your his-and-herstories by checking out a new box set of the 25th anniversary edition of Before and After Stonewall, both of which are now out on DVD.
I found Before a lot more compelling—as the truly dark days of the gay community, the oral histories carry a sadness to them that is hard to bear, at times—and structurally more sound, with a better-timed pace to it. After felt rushed and crammed. However, watching them back-to-back still felt powerful and intense.
And, as proof that history—and herstory!—is never fixed, check out this New York Times article on the inspiring Storme DeLarverie.
