IFP INDEPENDENT FILMMAKER CONFERENCE
September 19 – 23, 2009, NYC
Here are a few of the conferences panels I’m hoping to check out:
9/20 SUNDAY at 4PM PAYING THE BILLS – SUSTAINING YOUR FILM CAREER - past MTM filmmaker Jesse Epstein and Reva Goldberg of Cinereach, which Co-Presented MTM9 this year as panelists will be talking about film-financials. Its a tough time, but as people keep saying, also a time to think creatively about how to sustain your lifestyle. “Character-building” work can, in a very direct way, be of benefit to your scope, range and insight as a filmmaker. Filmmaker Magazine’s recent article A FILMMAKER’S GLAMOROUS LIFE was pretty good at highlighting the various other jobs filmmakers have picked up along the way. Didn’t see much bartending or waitressing… maybe we should make an Arts Engine “past lives” version?
9/21 MONDAY at 5:30PM FILM FESTIVALS AND EMERGING TECHNOLOGY is a look into how festivals are adjusting to developments in technology. This should be interesting for ideas on how to keep MTM ahead of the curve. We recently added an updated design that links the audience more directly to the relevant news, take action links and enables comments when watching a film, for example, but its interesting that our youtube channel still sees much more – in fact hundreds more - comments daily. Our Facebook presence thrives, and yet it would be great to integrate talk-back options with our larger and broader youtube audience… It will be interesting to see how other, more offline festivals are thinking of online technology, even if they aren’t looking to offer the “direct action” elements of MTM. Hopefully we will see them become more flexible to filmmakers making their films available online and not restrict submission to their festival!?
9/22 TUESDAY at 5:30PM THE STATE OF DISTRIBUTION – THE CURRENT & FUTURE INDIE MODEL This panel will help as we figure out each year what the best forms available to distribute MTM films are, and work with filmmakers to discuss the best options for their films.
On 9/23 WEDS at 10:00AM check out Arts Engine Exec Director Katy Chevigny on this panel discussing innovative funding options: FRESH FUNDING: MODERN IDEAS FOR DOC FINANCING
If you are able to attend the ifp film market, make sure to check out this year’s Jury Award winners Jennifer Redfearn and Tim Metzger present their works-in-progress for the feature length version of The Next Wave entitled Sun Come Up.
