Knowing Your Audience
I am a consulting producer on a documentary called Pop Star on Ice about the irreverant, Olympic ice skater, Johnny Weir’s rise to fame. My friends, David Barba and James Pellerito, are the directors/writers/editors/producers of this project. (Say that three times fast!) They have had their hands on this movie for a long time and now that the film is done, and a series for The Sundance Channel is in the works, the next phase is getting the word out. But what do you do when you don’t have a huge publicist behind you? Yes, Johnny has a huge fan base but getting the word out to this fan base is the key to this project’s success.
Knowing that Perez Hilton, a gossip blogger who gets millions of hits a day, is a Johnny fan, David and James sent an email to him with a link to the trailer. Hilton blogged about it and the trailer has been put on blogs all over. The Pop Star on Ice Facebook page went from a few friends to over 200 and growing!
There is a lesson here in knowing your audience and, maybe more importantly, knowing who are the most powerful people within your audience who can get the word out the fastest. Yes, Johnny Weir is a celebrity of sorts but this lesson can and should be applied to docs about other subject matter.
Pop Star on Ice will premiere at The Seattle International Film Festival and will screen at festivals throughout the year.
