Never Ending…
As I stepped off the plane and was thanked by the sweet southern accent of home, I knew it was going to be a good weekend.
Durham’s Full Frame Festival 2010 was being held, and I conveniently scheduled a trip home to catch a few of the amazing documentaries.
One highlight was Summer Pasture that received honorable mentions. This film started as the short A Nomad’s Life in the eighth annual Media that Matters collection.
From the opening shots of the sun rising, I was whole-heartedly on the journey of a Tibetan couple living as traditional herders. They move from pasture to pasture raising their Yaks in a seemingly carefree way, when in fact this is now a government-controlled action. In an aesthetically beautiful and somber tone, we learn about a couple’s way of life and how modernization is affecting it.
The under-attended gem that I also saw was the collection of documentary shorts. Standing out was, Photograph of Jesus, that creatively uses animation bringing to life impossible requests of the Getty Images archive. Born Sweet is a remarkable story that shows how outreach combined with Karaoke could improve a child’s life better in Cambodia.
Now back in NY, I proudly sport my vintage-themed Full Frame Fest shirt, wishing I could have seen more flicks.
