The 20th Anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of the Child
Today is the 20th anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of the Child and I had the privilege of attending their commemoration ceremony. There I was able to listen to some young people who gave an inside perspective on what is going on in their lives and what they believe needs to be changed.
Mayra an 18-year-old activist from Brazil spoke about the violence in her community all because of skin color.
“Can you imagine war going on in front of your door, waking up to the sound of bullets?” she said.
Aown, a 16-year-old Pakistani activist spoke about the want and need for education.
“Getting to school for these children is as hard as getting to space,” Aowun said.
Finally, the overall message was summed up by Millicent, a 17-year-old Kenyan activist, when she said, ” Children don’t just want resolutions, we want solutions.”
The future of humanity is calling out to us. We need to make sure we do our part.
