The Voice of 4,000
Last week I attended a screening of The Road Ahead: The First Green Long March at The Asia Society here in New York. Bill McKibben, the now legendary author of Deep Economy, was there with Mike Raisler of Cinereach , who produced the film. Documenting the first Green Long March in China, Raisler and Director Ryan Wong sought to portray the enthusiasm that Chinese youth currently feel towards solving environmental issues. After so many months of such bad news about China’s toys and food, it was refreshing to see a film about a movement striving towards a better future.
In a serendipitous twist of fate, the screening also pointed to our own backyard, to a protest of 4,000 people on Capitol Hill near the tail end of Power Shift 2009. McKibben was in DC, too, to participate in a protest that resulted in the full conversion from coal to natural gas for the capitol’s energy needs. Stepping back from these two one-off events, it’s easier to see how media and community engagement go hand in hand. McKibben also announced a campaign called 350.org set for the Global Day of Climate Action on October 24, 2009. Mark your calendars! Or get 350 of your closest friends together and produce your own 350.org action!
