Film Description
Flower Road is the story of race, bigotry, redemption, life and death all closely following the lives of two paramedics that must ride the graveyard shift in the ghettos of Birmingham, Alabama every night. Tommy, the white paramedic, is a hardened, callous, horribly insensitive, on the surface racist, and yet underneath the surface, a weak man. Night after night he rides this beat, always commenting negatively about the people that care, his partner Jamal, the black paramedic, is not about to go any extra mile to help the people of this beat, nor does he ultimately have any feelings towards those who have lost somebody to violence. Jamal puts up with Tommy’s degrading remarks and rants, partially because he agrees with it, and also because he’s happy with the job that affords him a house in a nicer neighborhood and status that elevates him above all of this.
The story culminates when Tommy realizes that no matter his views, nothing will change in the ghetto and because of his color, he cannot have these views. The story climaxes when Tommy responds to a call where Jamal has been shot while responding to a gang violence call. Ultimately he is trying to save two lives while the neighborhood around him condenses in and he is caught with two dead people: his partner and a random victim of the chaos. It ends with him looking upon the crowd and asking. Is this what you need? It is a question for all of us in society; what does it take to make us all realize that life has no dollar value, that it’s all in our best interest who is killed and who isn’t, that there is a moral right and wrong, and that we all are ultimately responsible. The story ends with Tommy driving on his next assignment with a new partner, a new hope, new salvation, and a new outlook. It’s a story of black and white, hate and love, hope and redemption.
