Film Description

Shortly before her death in 2006, this documentary on legendary American jazz singer Anita O’Day was completed.  O’Day appears in the film both as an interviewee and in archival footage from the height of her fame.  Shattering all female singer stereotypes, O’Day was known for her West Coast style of jazz.  She recorded 17 albums between 1952 and 1962.  Unfortunately, she was also known for two arrests (including a stint in jail) for marijuana possession, erratic onstage behavior, and a near fatal overdose of heroin.  After getting clean in the late 1960s, O’Day went on to appear in three films and record 14 more albums, one being released just seven months prior to her death.  In Anita O’Day: The Life of a Jazz Singer, she speaks candidly about her addictions as well as her success after kicking the habit.  The documentary was nominated for Best Long Form Music Video at the 52nd Grammy Awards.
