Film Description

Beyond Beats and Rhymes will be a bold, ground-breaking 60-minute documentary film that will take an in-depth look at machismo in rap music and hip-hop culture. The film will include intelligent, divergent voices of rap fans and social critics from inside and outside the hip-hop generation who will speak candidly about the struggle to negotiate the exciting creativity, addictive rhythms and intoxicating beats of rap music, and the blatant misogyny, cavalier violence and deeply rooted homophobia that permeate the art form.

Over the course of an hour, the viewer will be prodded to think more deeply about violence, misogyny, and homophobia in hip-hop music within the context of a capitalist, patriarchal American society.
