Film Description

During his 60-year career as a master strategist and tireless activist, Bayard Rustin achieved national prominence as organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, one of the largest and most jubilant peaceful protests ever held in the U.S. He is also credited with bringing Gandhi's protest techniques to the American civil rights movement, and with helping to mold Martin Luther King Jr. into an international symbol of peace and nonviolence; though his practice of these beliefs drew the attention of the FBI and police.

Bayard Rustin was intelligent, gregarious and charismatic but denied his place in the limelight for one reason -- he was also gay.

Brother Outsider combines rare archival footage - some of it never before broadcast in the U.S. - with provocative interviews to illuminate the life and work of a forgotten prophet of social change.

An Independent Television Service (ITVS) and National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC) Co-presentation.
