Film Description
Known in the United States as To Be & To Have, Etre et Avoir follows a one-room school in rural France, where one teacher presided over a single class of students ranging in age from four to twelve. While such a mixed class may seem like a daunting task, teacher Georges Lopez rules with ironclad dedication. We follow the students through their studies and back to their modest homes, as well as viewing the excitement of students about to enter their first year. The film, which was nominated for an Out of Competition prize at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival, sparked some controversy when Lopez attempted to sue the filmmakers for misrepresentation.
