Film Description
This stylish documentary is a moving tribute to Ellen Stewart, the founder of New York's La MaMa Experimental Theatre Company. Stewart recounts how she built a theater of international stature and acclaim starting from her beginnings as a porter at Saks Fifth Avenue in 1950. Lively interviews with such LaMaMa artists as Harvey Fierstein and Elizabeth Swados are combined with recently rediscovered performance footage and an original soundtrack by Swados in this empowering portrait. With more than 1300 productions to her credit and several Obie Awards, Stewart has boldly forged a niche in an art world virtually closed to African American women.
