Film Description

Man with a Movie Camera is an experimental 1929 silent documentary film by Russian “Kino? director Dziga Vertov featuring modern urban life in the Soviet Union. The film is particularly unique in its use of cinematic techniques which range throughout the film from extreme close-ups and Dutch angles to editing techniques employing freeze frames, slow motion and superimposing images. Controversy surrounded the film as obvious fictional staging in the film contradicted Vertov’s criticisms of non-Documentary film. A statement issued by the Director in Pravda warned of its experimental nature but defended “its complete separation from the language of theatre and literature.”
