Film Description

During the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, a newly built secondary school on a hill named Murambi was the site of one of the world’s most horrifying mass murders. This film informs us about the events that took place at Murambi and explores the link between Rwanda and Darfur, Sudan. I was invited to Rwanda in the summer of 2006 to help start a video production program at the National University of Rwanda (NUR) and to teach a pilot video production class. The National University of Rwanda is not in Kigali, the Rwandan capital, but in Butare, about two hours south. The only tourist “attraction in the area is the Genocide Memorial at Murambi. Few people go. I was the only person there the times I went. It’s the most haunting memorial I’ve ever visited and being there prompted me to make this film.
