Film Description

Shipping Out looks at the little known history of women and seafaring in America.  Featured in the program are women who hold jobs in commercial shipping.  We meet them working as engineers, bar pilots, tug boat captains, mates and deckhands.

Women officers arrived on ships in the late 1970’s. On board, they worked with all male crew and confronted age-old attitudes that traditionally barred women from ships.  Ironically, history tells us that women worked on vessels for hundreds of years, most often they were disguised as men, were pirates, or they were toiling wives of sea captains.  Shipping Out looks at the complicated, and sometimes contradictory, history of women and the sea.
