Film Description

A confused teenage killer. A fighter pilot. A young criminal turned police officer. The daughters of a revolutionary. The child of an assassinated politician. A revolutionary. A counterrevolutionary. Widows and orphans of war. The sons and daughters of the new Nicaragua, and the midwife who birthed them on July 19, 1979, the day Sandinista revolutionaries took power from the Somoza dictatorship.

They are of all ages, a variety of classes, and both sides of Nicaragua's civil war. They are the ordinary Nicaraguans who narrate the story of 22 turbulent years in their nation's history, from the triumph of the Sandinistas, to the day they were voted out of office in 1990, to the tumultuous years since. This film, beautifully shot among the wreckage of Nicaragua's disastrous war, the abandoned properties of its old landholders, and the urban slums of Managua, presents the story of Nicaragua from a variety of perspectives, summing up the complex tragedy of a nation which remains marked by its past even as it advances into a new and uncertain future.
