Film Description

Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi’s The Accordion had its U.S. premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 5th. The film had its world premiere, with critical and public success, at this year’s Venice Film Festival.

Panahi was banned from leaving his home country to attend the festival, setting off an international backlash from the media and artistic community.

The Accordion, a tale of two young street musicians in Tehran, is part of the collective feature film Then and Now: Beyond Borders and Differences which creatively explores the themes of tolerance and respect for differences inspired by Article 18 of The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which states “Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion.”  Then and Now is a project of ART for the World under the auspices of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and the Council of Europe, produced in partnership with, among others, ARTE France, SESC-Sao Paulo and Dorjefilm.

The film will include the participation of 11 filmmakers from 11 countries and was first presented, as a work in progress, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the Third UNAOC Forum. Then and Now is slated for completion by March 2011, in time for a screening at the International Festival of Human Rights in Geneva, Switzerland.
