Film Description
Examines the culture of failure that is endemic among children of poverty and children of color in our society, its causes, its consequences, and the prognosis for overcoming it. The problem of increasing violence in our schools and communities is discussed in the context of larger social issues of economics, culture and community life. Students, teachers, administrators, parents, community leaders and clergy provide a range of perspectives on the current crisis. Included among the authors interviewed are Cornel West (Race Matters), Luis Rodriguez (Always Running), Valerie Polakow (Lives on the Edge) and Thomas Fleming, National Teacher of the Year. The video also examines the systemic tendency for some children to be held in lesser regard, tracing the effects of this tendency through the educational system, particularly with regard to special education and race issues.
