Film Description
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of "the great wide open" in the rural midwest, This Ain't No Heartland was conceptualized in anger, and culminated in parody.
Andreas Horvath set out to the midwest from Austria when the war in Iraq begun to make a film to try to understand the "real" America, and who could possibly be supporting George Bush. He wound up interviewing people who were in support of the war without really having an understanding of why they were supporting it, but instead relied on what Horvath calls "blind patriotism." He documented the obesity of many Americans living there, as well as their misguidedness, and lack of desire to be educated.
Controversy has sprung up about the film, stemming from complaints that Horvath was only interviewing the "mentally disturbed", but he does not make a claim to be capturing all of America, only those residing in the "Heartland."
