Film Description

Nearly three million American's live full-time in motor homes, campers and trailers. Millions more spend significant portions of each year wandering America in their homes on wheels. This is Nowhere records stories from the road as these nomadic Americans' search for adventure, understanding and fun. Taking advantage of the modern American landscape, tens of thousands of vacation and full-time travelers steer their RVs into Wal-Mart parking lots each year to "camp" for a night or two. If you look, if you care to notice, you will find people "camping" in Wal-Mart parking lots all across the nation. And these people are not camping there because they have to, their vehicles didn't break down, they want to camp in Wal-Mart parking lots. Travelers in RVs, or Recreational Vehicles, are seeking out Wal-Marts as travel destinations, just like they seek out National Parks, Museums, relatives, historic sites, and RV conventions as travel destinations. This is Nowhere documents the motivations and philosophies of these Wal-Mart campers. The travelers are interesting and genuine people who share a common bond of loving to travel in RVs, and loving Wal-Mart. Most of them are interested in nature, meeting new people, learning about our nation's history, or just plain new experiences, but they are also interested in the predictability, homogeneity, security, and sameness that Wal-Mart provides for travel and shopping. This Is Nowhere documents the joys and rewards of traveling the American road without ever leaving home. The rationale for seeking out Wal-Marts as destinations provides a fascinating portrait of American culture at the dawn of the 21st century. Full of irony, This is Nowhere humorously captures the essence of American attitudes toward nature, equality, liberty and civic values as it documents the travelers' interaction with landscape, technology, communities, and each other.
