Film Description

Rajasthan is one of the poorest places in India,
subject to frequent disasters such as drought or
flood. Many of the inhabitants belong to the
untouchables.Women are a particularly exploited
group with an illiteracy rate as high as 80
percent compared to 45% for men. More and more
development work in Rajasthan, as in India as a
whole, is being done by voluntary organizations
known as non-governmental organizations or NGOs.
These organizations try to mobilize grass roots
support for development - some with more success
than others. This documentary looks at two NGOs
whose relief efforts have made an impact on this
area of India, each with its own unique
organization, purpose and approach to bringing
long-term development directly to the people.

Other titles in THE THIRD WORLD DEVELOPMENT SERIES
include: I USED TO WORK IN THE FIELDS, OUT OF
DEVELOPMENT, A VULNERABLE LIFE, THE POVERTY
COMPLEX, GENDER MATTERS, LESSONS FROM KERALA, THE
CUTTING EDGE OF PROGRESS, MOZAMBIQ
