Film Description
When the Spanish arrived in southern Mexico, the Lancandones, direct descendants of the classical Mayas, fled to the safety and isolation of the rain forest. Now numbering fewer than 500, the Lancandones live on a million acres of threatened land in Chiapas, Mexico.
In 1990, independent filmmaker Mark Hall traveled to Chiapas in the southernmost province of Mexico to document the life of K'ayum (Singing God), a 10-year-old Mayan-Lancandones boy whom Hall befriended on a trip in 1984. In his film, Two Worlds Touch, Hall records the relationship between K'ayum and Chan-Kin Jorge, K'ayum's grandfather, as they plant and gather in the forest, catch armadillos, fish, and prepare food. We also see earth movers and chainsaws: the "advance" of a civilization which threatens the traditional life of the Lancandones.
