DATELINE AFGHANISTAN: Reporting the Forgotten War
DATELINE AFGHANISTAN: Reporting the Forgotten War explores the conflict in Afghanistan through the prism of the men and women who cover it. Veteran reporter Bill Gentile spent a month in an embedded assignment with U.S. troops in Afghanistan, following fellow reporters and photographers from The New York Times, the BBC, Time, and The Washington Post as well as others, to reveal the daily personal and professional pressures of the men and women who send us the first draft of history. The film takes us to the front lines and back alleys of the war-torn Central Asian nation where Western powers are engaged in an historic and high-stakes battle to build a representative democracy in a traditionally Islamic society. The United States alone has some 20,000 troops fighting for hearts and minds in Afghanistan—in the shadow of the media spotlight shining on Iraq. Bill Gentile went to learn about Afghanistan from the dwindling number of foreign correspondents covering America’s war, the people whose responsibility is “to have our eyes open all the time,â€? as one veteran photographer says. What emerges is a sensitive portrait of journalists who still believe that their work can make a difference. Gentile also uncovers how the U.S. military presence both aids and hinders journalists in their efforts to give fair and balanced coverage.
