Independent Perspective 9.11

Devastating events and imagery still linger in the hearts of young people all across the country. This fall Mediarights.org supports both educators and young people ‘s search for understanding and action amidst national and international upheaval.

Here are a few organizations offering educational materials and creative outlets for youth in the aftermath of September 11, 2001.

  • For Whose Freedom http://www.videomachete.org/home1.html is a project that developed 5 Public Service Announcements created by youth and community members addressing the need for educational materials in the aftermath September 11. The PSAs address issues such as anti-immigrant racism, definitions of "patriotism," and the impact of war. Teachers! Check out the sample curriculum. Video Machete http://www.videomachete.org/ is a Chicago-based, inter-generational, collective of cultural workers committed to producing cultural work that addresses real change in our communities and society.

  • 9.11-9.11: The Year in Youth Activism http://www.wiretapmag.org/story.html?StoryID=14081 is an inspiring time line chronicling the rise of youth activism found at Wiretap http://www.wiretapmag.org/. This timeline refutes the picture adults often paint of apathetic youth and reflects how politically savvy today's teens and young adults truly are. Wiretap showcases investigative news articles, personal essays and opinions, artwork and activism resources that challenge stereotypes, inspire creativity, foster dialogue and give young people a voice in the media.

  • About Our Kids http://www.aboutourkids.com is a project of the New York University Child Study Center. The center is made up of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals dedicated to children and their families offering psychiatric and psychological services with emphasis on early diagnosis and intervention. Here you will find support for caring for your children who may be exhibiting signs of post-traumatic stress. You can also find reports about how children all over the country are coping and growing in spite of their fears.

  • YouthNOISE, a DC based ezine, is place where teens can make some noise about things they don't like, and take ACTION and make a DIFFERENCE in issues that affect them.
