Media Education and Current AffairsA Media Literacy Workshop
The Just Think Foundation (http://www.justthink.org) is currently offering a comprehensive media literacy training offering educational tools to help young people become critical thinkers of media and current affairs. This workshop also provides thought-provoking materials for teachers to help youth responsibly voice their ideas and perspective to their community and the world. The one-day intensive workshop is specifically designed for teachers, youth workers and community leaders with group facilitation experience.
How will teachers be able to use this information in their classrooms?
This workshop models the activities and exercises that teachers will be able to use in their classrooms. All of the lessons from the workshop will be provided to the participants so that they can use and modify them to fit their curriculum needs. A packet of additional lesson plans, activities, research and supplemental media literacy information will be provided to inform the unit and lesson planning process.
Topics covered include: effective approaches when talking to young people about the influence of media on all our lives, an overview of basic media literacy concepts with a focus on current affairs, bias, and the portrayal of post-September 11 terrorism, war & violence in mainstream media, how to apply these concepts to a variety of media messages, examples of and ideas for positive youth produced media.
