North Korea: Beyond the DMZis a new one hour documentary that follows a young Korean American woman to one of the most mysterious and demonized countries on earth: the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. This documentary offers a unique look at life there today, post-famine but in the midst of both economic and nuclear crises. As tensions have continued to mount between north Korea and the United States, this program presents not only an alternative look at this "evil empire" but a more human one, a view that has rarely been presented in America
Using archival materials, interviews with individuals, scholars and experts in both north Korea and the U.S. woven together with footage of life in the D.P.R.K., North Korea: Beyond the DMZis both the story of a personal journey, as well as a journey through a turbulent past and a tension filled present.

Produced and directed by the makers of THE WOMEN OUTSIDE and THE #7 TRAIN, JT Takagi and Hye-Jung Park are among the very few U.S. based independent filmmakers to have shot in North Korea.
