DOCS, BLOGS & THE CHANGING POLITICS OF AMERICA
Saturday, Jan 22. 4:00 PM, Digital Center
Recent advances in digital technology have enabled an upsurge in independent and maverick political discourse accessible to large American audiences. From the unprecedented success of Fahrenheit 9/11 and other digital docs to the phenomenon of bloggers crowding the presidential conventions, this past year has featured a reinvigorated social discourse not seen for nearly a generation. But what has emerged from all the noise? Was the outcome of the 2004 election affected? Have the fundamental dynamics of media and politics changed? Now that there are more ways than ever to influence the political process and make your voice heard, what are the strategies for marketing your message? Moderated by Andy Bowers of National Public Radio and Slate.com.
THE NEW DOC MARKET
Monday, Jan 24, 2:00 PM, Filmmaker Lodge
Exciting new opportunities for documentary film sales and distribution have been emerging over the past few years-so what is the new reality of the nonfiction marketplace? From traditional broadcast, theatrical, and home video sales to new Web and DVD models, nonfiction filmmakers can now access multiple avenues to reach their audience. Join moderator Jan Rofekamp (Films Transit) and panelists Mette Hoffmann Meyer (TV2 Denmark), Debra Zimmerman (Women Make Movies), Mark Urman (THINKFilm), Heino Deckert (Deckert Distribution), and director Robert Greenwald (Outfoxed) to discuss the longevity of these new models and their impact on distribution strategies.
VISIONS OF REALITY: WERNER HERZOG & FREDERICK WEISMAN
Wednesday, Jan 26, 11:00 AM, Filmmaker Lodge
"Documentary" means different things to different people. With the form expanding to include a host of work ranging from hybrids to docudramas, animation, essays, and reality soaps, to films with a strident point of view or work comprised entirely of reenactment and dramatization, we welcome the opportunity to discuss the documentary with two extraordinary filmmakers, Werner Herzog and Frederick Wiseman, who will talk about their work and the new frontiers opening to nonfiction storytellers.
THE WORLD IS WATCHING
Sunday, Jan 23, 11:00 AM, Filmmaker Lodge
Documentaries give us what the evening news cannot: the context, complexities, and human stories behind the major conflicts and political challenges of our time. Join us for a discussion about the urgency of these films and their potential impact to affect change with General Roméo Dallaire and director Peter Raymont (Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Roméo Dallaire); director Sean McAllister (The Liberace of Baghdad); director Eugene Jarecki (Why We Fight); and Nick Fraser, Storyville, BBC. Moderated by John Anderson, chief film critic for Newsday.
