Quarters From Kids: Youth Aid in Tsunami Relief
In the wake of the devastation caused by the tsunami in South and Southeast Asia, a great act of "choosing to participate" has been born. Facing History and Ourselves has been involved since the inception of this campaign only a week ago, when one person came up with the idea to build a coalition of organizations that work with youth to respond to this crisis.
Quarters From Kids is now a coalition of over 100 organizations.
Quarters From Kids is a nationwide, grass-roots effort to engage
young Americans, and adults who work with them, in a collective
response to the tsunami disaster in Asia. Connecting the idealism and activism of youth with immediate and long-term needs of peoples and communities devastated by the tsunamis will contribute funds to the relief and redevelopment efforts. We know that as America's youth learn how they can help, we and they can take responsibility to help others through service and support.

A website hosted by Google has been created to help young people, college students and adults who work with young people raise money and access resources. Facing History and Ourselves has also created an online discussion at www.facinghistory.org/tsunamidisaster, in which educators are sharing students' reaction to the news, student-led efforts to raise funds, debates on how to extend this outpouring of support to help with other crises such as the genocide in Sudan and how to educate about prevention. Facing History is serving as chair of the Quarters From Kids curriculum committee as we discover the wealth of materials available for educators and their students on issues of youth making a positive difference in the world.
