Protest For Vieque\'s Health @ PR\'s Governor\'sMansion
The “All Puerto Rico with Vieques” Coordinating
Comittee convokes a protest to be held next Tuesday, June 28 at 10.30 AM in front of the Fortaleza(Governor’s Mansión) in Old San Juan to denounce the continuation of open detonation of explosives on Vieques by the US Navy, posing a danger for the health of the Viequenses. Recent reports by the Health Department indicate Vieques continues to show a much higher cancer case rate than the rest of Puerto Rico. There are alternatives to open detonation, such as the
use of ‘controlled detonation chambers’, employed in the cleanup of bombing range at Massachusetts Military Reserve by order of the EPA, but the Navy refuses to use them on Vieques.
Viequenses are no less important that the people of Massachusetts! We demand that the Governor demand the Navy and EPA to use alternatives to open detonation of explosives on Vieques. Together with representatives of the Committee for the Rescue and Development of Vieques, we will hand deliver to the Governor a letter with our demands for peace with justice toward a clean
and healthy Vieques.
