NEEDED: Youth Media Educator

New Media Educator/Artist with the Learning Without Borders Program

Learning Without Borders is a multicultural arts program for elementary students in the low-income urban community of Richmond, California. Among other art forms, this program integrates digital media arts with academics into the public school classroom. Students explore issues of community, culture, identity, and social change and create digital stories around these themes, sharing their perspective with others through school video screenings, community showcases, and student film festivals.

The goal of this project is to deliver effective arts education curriculum into the public school classroom that enhances teaching and enriches learning. Learning Without Borders is a Model Arts in Education award recipient from the U.S. Department of Education.

The New Media Educator will be responsible for piloting the existing program curriculum and evaluating its effectiveness towards youth development and arts integration outcomes.

Responsibilities are to:
Lead a weekly new media class for 2 hours, to over 30 4th grade students, for 12 weeks.
Pilot, evaluate, and modify curricular materials.
Produce from concept to completion student videos and digital art pieces.
Participate in regular program planning design meetings and monthly screenings.

Required Skills:
Experience working with low-income children of color
Media Literacy, digital video and photography experience
Knowledge of video production and post-production techniques (storyboarding, editing, etc.)
Strong teaching and group facilitation skills

Hours: 12pm -3pm, Thursday or Friday; additional hours to be determined
Starts late September 2005

Bilingual and Artists of color strongly encouraged to apply. Hourly pay starting at $25 + 25% for planning and prep .
