DocuClub presents In-the-Works - Golden Venture

What Film: Golden Venture

This session's film selection is Golden Venture, directed by Peter Cohn (his followup to Drunks, a 1996 Sundance selection). The film tells the story of a group of Fujianese men who set sail on the doomed freighter, Golden Venture, expecting to find a new life of freedom in America. The freighter, carrying 286 smuggled Chinese immigrants, ran aground off Queens, NY in 1993. Ten immigrants drowned. The rest were immediately rounded up by the INS and detained, many languishing in prison for four
years. Twelve years later, in the post-9/11 atmosphere, their battle for freedom continues.

Peter Cohn is a New York-based writer and filmmaker. He produced,co-wrote and directed Drunks, a film set in a Manhattan Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, starring Richard Lewis, Faye Dunaway, Dianne Wiest, Parker Posey and Spalding Gray. Drunks was shown at Sundance in 1996, premiered on Showtime and was released theatrically in 1997 to widespread
critical acclaim. The New York Times called it “superbly realized.” Drunks received the motion picture industry's Prism Award for 1997, inrecognition of the film's realistic depiction of alcohol and drug addiction. He co-wrote the screenplay Hairdo, an immigrant-themed comedy which was awarded best screenplay in the competition at the Nantucket Film
Festival in 1997.
