About the film:
Refugee Dreams chronicles a year in the lives of two Somali Bantu families who became refugees during 1991. After thirteen years in barren, desolate refugee camps in Kenya, they arrived in America last year. Their journey into the modern world is a journey in time. Before coming to America, they had never seen television, buildings higher than a single story, computers, elevators, and all the things we take for granted in modern life.
About the filmmakers: Anne Makepeace’s recent documentary, Robert Capa in Love and War, had its Sundance premiere in January 2003 and was broadcast on PBS’ American Masters, the BBC, and many other foreign stations. The film won the Voice for Humanity Award at Telluride MountainFilm, and a national prime time Emmy. Her previous film, Coming to Light, Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indians, was short-listed for an Academy Award, premiered at Sundance 2000, and was broadcast on American Masters/PBS in 2001 as well as on Arte and other foreign stations. The film won a CINE Golden Eagle, a Gold Hugo award from Chicago, Best Documentary at Telluride Mountainfilm, and many other awards. Her personal documentary, Baby It’s You, also premiered at Sundance, was the lead show on POV’s 1998 season, was broadcast on Channel 4’s True Stories series, and screened at the Whitney Biennial 2000. In addition to Refugee Dreams, Makepeace is currently producing Building China Modern, a long-term project about I.M. Pei and his new Suzhou Museum, and a short documentary about Eleanor Roosevelt. Refugee Dreams was funded by ITVS, and also the Sundance Documentary Fund, and will be broadcast on POV in 2006/2007.
