3rd Annual NYC Grassroots Media Conference

Saturday February 11, 2006

New York, NY - The NYC Grassroots Media Coalition (NYCGMC) will organize its third Conference at the New School University this February. The conference theme, forging stronger connections between independent media and communities organizing around issues of justice and equality, seeks to address pressing issues of representation and diversity within the NYC community. While attention will focus on the current state of the NYC independent media community, presenters aim to cover a diverse range of topics.

A projected one thousand students, activists, media makers, community workers and artists will convene in Manhattan this February for a day of workshops, do-it-yourself (DIY) trainings, discussions and panels. The 3rd annual GMC will house a community art exhibition and film screenings focused on local campaigns for social justice, political awareness and media accountability. The conference will also boast a youth track of panels for its 300 participants under 21, free refreshments for youth interested in learning more about media activism and alternative channels of media.

The first NYC Grassroots Media Conference in 2004 was convened by a collective of volunteer media activists in response to the outrage over the 2003 FCC attempt to further deregulate the media industry and the public’s desire for a more democratic media. The 2005 Grassroots Media Conference drew 800 participants. The annual conference is part of a continued effort to dialogue and strategize how local media makers can be more accountable to and inclusive of the diverse communities of New York City. Participating organizers include members of Paper Tiger Television, May First Technology Collective and the NYC Independent Media Center.

The event at the New School University will offer childcare services, special rates and informational materials upon request. Currently, conference proposals as well as art submissions are being accepted for review.
