P.O.V. Seeks Associate Web Producer

P.O.V./American Documentary is seeking an Associate Producer to work in its Manhattan, New York office in the P.O.V. Interactive department.

Now entering its 19th season on PBS, P.O.V. features the best in non-fiction point-of-view filmmaking. P.O.V. films have won every major film and television award, including the Emmy, Peabody, Columbia Dupont and Academy Awards. P.O.V. Interactive has won every major Internet award, including the Webby Award, the Batten Award for Innovations in Journalism and the Online Journalism Association Award for Creative Use of the Medium. Reporting to the P.O.V. Interactive Director and P.O.V./AmDoc's Executive Director, the position entails a unique combination of research, writing and production skills to be used towards the successful implementation of the P.O.V./American Documentary Web site (pbs.org/pov and amdoc.org), and towards the support of P.O.V./AmDoc’s Web staff and Executive Director in producing P.O.V./AmDoc Interactive projects. Working with PBS Online, local stations and independent producers, P.O.V. Interactive will produce companion Web sites for all 2006 films, a new episode of our Web-only series, P.O.V.'s Borders, and maintain the American Documentary and True Lives Web sites as needed throughout 2006.

P.O.V./AmDoc Web sites extend the life of our films beyond broadcast, and our online projects promote learning, civic engagement and community building. Working with P.O.V./AmDoc, you'll have the chance to be involved with one of the leading non-fiction non-profits in America, developing unique websites from brainstorm to launch. You'll also be working on PBS.org, one of the most-visited .org websites in the world. You'll do editorial research on the wide range of topics that our films engage, and contribute to an internationally known non-profit working at the intersection of art and social issues. You would be part of a highly productive three-person team with intern support and several consultants hired on an as-needed basis.

Specific responsibilities include:

Editorial & Production of P.O.V. 2006 Companion Sites and P.O.V.'s Borders
• Brainstorming topics and formats for interactive features and articles on the 2006 film companion Web sites
• Researching content for 2006 film companion Web sites and the new episode of P.O.V.'s Borders: American Identity, due to launch in April 2006
• Writing spot copy such as headlines and summaries for interactive features and articles
• Coordinating deliverables (images, text and research) for Senior Producer
• Writing copy and editing code on weekly P.O.V. HTML newsletter template during 2006 season
• Digitizing film trailers and clips for streaming on P.O.V. Web site (RealVideo, Windows Media and Quicktime)
• Monitoring discussion boards, the P.O.V. Tapestry and selecting best quotes from viewers/site visitors
• Creating new images from templates in Photoshop for weekly Web site homepage updates
• Assistance in updating HTML/images on Web site as needed
• Input/review/editing of interim and final traffic reports, postmortems, etc.

Supporting Interactive Dept. Director, Senior Web Producer and Executive Director in the following areas:
• Planning for major 2007 redesign of P.O.V. Web site
• Filmmaker, PBS Online and station-relations liaison as assigned
• Maintaining P.O.V. Digital Archives / P.O.V. Interactive's back-end database
• Fielding filmmaker calls, providing/collecting info on companion Web sites
• Providing support to other departments on their Web site content throughout the season, particularly the pressroom and community engagement areas of the site
• Responding to user emails
• Recruiting and overseeing production interns to help with research, coding and day-to-day maintenance on the site

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION – Minimum 2 years editorial website and/or production experience, BA. Knowledge of documentary film and commitment to independent media desired.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS – Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are necessary. Desire to collaborate with a committed, professional team. Track record working with diverse communities. Knowledge of Spanish a plus. Knowledge of and experience working with PBS and the public television system a plus

COMPUTER SKILLS – Hands-on experience with HTML/XHTML, with some knowledge of Javascript, CSS, cross-browser and cross-platform development, and design for accessibility. Experience working within a production environment with Photoshop, Illustrator, and BBEdit/Homesite/Dreamweaver. Familiarity with Flash / Actionscript a strong plus, as is knowledge of audio/video editing programs such as Final Cut Pro, iMovie, and Audition.

WORK STYLE – Flexible, self-starter, able to pursue several projects at once. A commitment to detail and precision. Willingness and ability to take on a wide range of tasks and accept responsibility for all phases of a project. Ability to work in a small team, on-deadline and under pressure. Ability to maintain sense of humor under stress and stay cool.

Salary commensurate with experience. Position would begin when filled. This is a fixed term six-month staff position. This position does not qualify for fringe benefits. The opportunity to extend the term and offer benefits will be evaluated at the conclusion of the six-month term.
