THE CALLING

Pursuing a path to become a priest or nun isn't exactly a hip thing nowadays. Afterall, a religious vocation requires many sacrifices. Certain ambitions must be set aside. Limits are placed on personal freedom. Connection to family, friends, and the outside world is often diminished. And let's not forget about celibacy. So why would anyone want to subject themselves to this kind of life? For those who believe they are experiencing a genuine call - they have no choice.

THE CALLING tells the story of a human drama that has been played out for centuries. Focusing on the members of a newly formed Catholic missionary order, this documentary explores the personal ramifications of rejecting the call of the world to answer the call of God. Exposing the realities of religious life, the film follows people pursuing a passion, and the complexities associated with this pursuit as they try to decipher if this
is truly what God wants from them. And it reveals their families inability to fully accept and comprehend this 'calling'. Shot over a four-year period, the film journeys across two continents with this religious community as they leave the United States behind to establish their mission in one of the many squatter's villages that ring Lima, Peru. THE CALLING is a film about hard choices and having the courage and faith to make them. It's a story about fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, redefining and expanding the meaning of those terms. And ultimately, it's
a tale of letting go.
