A Crazy Idea: The Philanthropy of Filmmaking
(Red Hook, NY) – UNDERGROUND CLINIC PRODUCTIONS & BAND OF BROTHERS/A CRAZY IDEA, INC. Has begun organizing a cross-country road trip from New York to New Orleans, with as many stops along the way as time will allow. The essential idea: To do anything possible to help negate the devastation of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The team plans to help clean, rebuild, and donate whatever supplies they can to the victims in the south.
Fortunately, they are not alone. Organizations such as “Hands on USA,” “New Orleans Voice For Peace,” and even the Lt. Governor of Louisiana are all on board and accepting contributions made to the Crazy Idea crew by people across the country. People have been sending letters, offering the team places to stay and supplies to deliver. Every day new members are added to the project, and more and more people are writing in and offering any supplies they can spare.
However, the members of the Crazy Idea project are interested in more than just New Orleans; their concerns are national. The crew plans to remain at their base of operations in New York until February—mapping, organizing, and, of course, collecting donations. On February 9, they will start filming, on February 17 a send off event will take place in Tivoli NY, February 19 they will pack up their van and, on the road to New Orleans, meet their contacts along the way, pick up their donations, and deliver them to hospitals and clinics across the east coast.
In addition, the team plans to film the entire journey, from their sending-off in New York, to their final goodbyes in New Orleans. Clay Laugier, the project coordinator, describes the Crazy Idea:
“The project is a mix of ‘Pay It Forward,’ ‘Extreme Home Makeover,’ ‘3 Wishes,’ craziness, and fun. The whole idea is to film my friends helping others alongside random people and a list of contacts. We want to tell the story of the people who gave up everything to help those in need. The crazy thing is our staff members have all quit their jobs to work on this project. We are going to show that you can still have fun while helping others. We also want to show that when the lights go off, the people in those hurricane-hit cities are still there living, and that they still need help even after the press stops reporting.”
