REPORTS TO: Head of School

ORGANIZATIONAL INFORMATION:
The New Mexico Media Literacy Project provides dynamic speakers and training workshops and produces unique multimedia teaching resources on a variety of media literacy topics. An outreach project of Albuquerque Academy, NMMLP has brought the media literacy message to hundreds of thousands of children and adults across New Mexico and the nation. NMMLP cultivates critical thinking and activism in our media culture to build healthy and just communities.

JOB SUMMARY:
The Executive Director has overall leadership responsibilities for the organization and guides the organizational and programmatic vision of NMMLP through strategy and leadership, business and financial management, fundraising and development, marketing/public relations/collaboration, human resources, and school relations.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy and Leadership
• Lead and implement the organization’s strategic direction and supporting the long-term growth and financial stability of the organization;
• Provide vision and leadership in all facets of resource development and programming in order to advance the organization’s strategic plan;
• Promote entrepreneurship, creative leadership, and vital community relations, while maintaining strong financial management;
• Provide overall program and policy direction, while maintaining a cooperative decision making environment.

Business and Financial Management
• Manage business, finance, operations, and administration matters;
• Prepare the budget for approval by the Albuquerque Academy Budget Committee; verify monthly budget reporting provided by Academy accounting department, and report financial activities as required by funders.
• Oversee fundraising planning and implementation, to include identifying resource needs, researching potential funding sources, and initiating requests for support necessary to underwrite NMMLP operations, as well as major projects and initiatives.

Fundraising /Development
• Lead and grow fundraising efforts, including the cultivation of the interest and financial support of major donors and sponsors as well as the preparation of grant and sponsorship proposals to corporations, foundations, and government agencies.

Marketing/ Public Relations/ Collaboration
• Oversee marketing/communications and work with staff on implementation, including final approval on marketing strategies, budgets, and timelines;
• Build relationships with colleagues, community partners, government officials, and external organizations, locally and nationally, to encourage the development of collaborative programs and events;
• Serve as a resource on legislative issues, news, events and other trends developing within the media industry

Human Resources
• Hire, direct, and support a talented staff that is responsible for the programs, day-to-day operations, and other management functions as determined by organizational needs and capacities;
• Develop and manage staff and create respectful and beneficial relationships with the core constituents of the organization while growing its base of support.

School Relations
• Serve as primary staff liaison to the departments and staff of Albuquerque Academy.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Imagination, vision, and leadership for one of the nation’s leading media literacy organizations;
2. Three or more years of media, arts, or progressive nonprofit management experience, preferably in an environment where teamwork and creativity are encouraged;
3. Knowledge of media literacy, media justice, and media policy issues preferred;
4. Good business, financial, and strategic planning skills, and the proven ability to raise funds, develop resources, and engage potential major donors and sponsors as well as political officials;
5. Skilled manager, with strong interpersonal, team-building skills;
6. Poise, presence, and ability to communicate both in writing and verbally;
7. Understanding of institutional image and relationship-building, marketing and external relations;
8. Political acumen to handle multiple community stakeholders including activists, artists, administrators, educators, and funders from diverse backgrounds, orientations, and perspectives.
