Films from the Sundance Film Festival at BAM

From May 12-21, BAM presents 14 films from the 2006 Sundance Film Festival as part of their series Sundance Institute at BAM.

For 25 years Sundance has worked to support unique and independent voices in American cinema. This year is no exception, with films taking on topics such as immigration, the war in Iraq, misogyny and masculinity in rap music, flaws in the criminal justice system, and capital punishment. Films include: American Blackout about the disenfranchisement of black voters; The Short Life of Jose Antonio Gutierrez about the first soldier to die in Iraq, a Guatemalan immigrant; Forgiven which examines the death penalty and society's racial and class divide; The Trials of Darryl Hunt about a black man who, despite multiple trials and DNA testing that proved his innocence, spent nearly 20 years in prison for a crime he did not commit; and Beyond Beats and Rhymes, a documentary which explores homophobia and misogyny in rap music.
