Love, Labor, Loss: NYC Film Release Party
GOVERNESS FILMS Releases Feature-Length Documentary Film and Advocacy/Educational Packets on Obstetric Fistula in Niger
LOVE, LABOR, LOSS
NEW YORK, NY – After a year of screening their short advocacy version of LOVE, LABOR, LOSS to thousands of new audiences at college campuses, conferences and in collaboration with Grammy-nominated Zap Mama’s 2005 tour, Governess Films is releasing the feature-length version (TRT: 75 minutes) of this compelling look at one of the most pressing reproductive health issues facing women in Africa. Produced and directed by international development specialist, Lisa Russell, LOVE, LABOR, LOSS profiles women in Niger, West Africa living with obstetric fistula – a relatively unknown but prevalent childbearing injury that has left over two million women in the developing world both physically and socially debilitated. The United Nations called fistula one of the “Top 10 Stories the World Should Know More About” in 2005. LOVE, LABOR, LOSS is the first U.S.-produced feature-length film on the issue.
Governess Films is currently self-distributing the film as an educational and advocacy tool. As part of an international film-based campaign for global women’s health, the film is distributed with Advocacy Packets that include fact sheets, guidelines on how to host community screenings, information about international agencies working on fistula and a how to help section which includes information and a letter on HR2811 – a bill that would direct U.S. funding to help provide fistula repair and treatment services to women that need it. A curriculum guide is being developed and will be ready for the 2006-2007 school year.
For more information on the film, to place an order or to arrange a screening, please visit www.lovelaborloss.com or www.myspace.com/lovelaborloss. * New and previous orders will be processed and mailed on June 5, 2006.
