Job Opening: Community Outreach Director
Global Action Project, Inc. (G.A.P.), an award-winning youth media arts organization based in New York City, seeks a full-time Community Outreach Director. Focused on social justice, our mission is to provide youth with the knowledge, tools and relationships they need to create powerful, thought-provoking media on local and international issues that concern them and to use their media for dialogue and positive social change. G.A.P.’s programs combine a dynamic mix of video production, media literacy, youth leadership and popular education.
Over the years, G.A.P. youth have produced videos on topics such as immigration, war, the school-to-prison pipeline, gangs, hate crimes, homophobia, sexual exploitation, teen culture and community health. Youth have led screenings and workshops at schools, conferences and festivals across the country and internationally. In addition, their videos are integrated into social justice campaigns and school curricula and reach communities through web distribution, television and other independent media outlets.
Qualifications: The Community Outreach Director is the main liaison connecting the youth leaders and their media to various venues including community-based organizations, high schools, universities, film festivals, web and broadcast. This is a very unique position with both internal and external responsibilities that require the ability to balance a variety of activities, from working on youth leadership initiatives to generating sustainable community partnerships to supporting G.A.P.’s visibility as a leader in the youth media field. This position requires someone with strong time-management skills and a flexible schedule.
The Community Outreach Director must also have excellent organizational and communication skills, commitment to working with diverse communities and be passionate about using media for social change. The Community Outreach Director should be a strong facilitator with a demonstrated commitment to youth leadership and possess working experience with digital video editing (e.g. Final Cut Pro, etc.) and experience in graphics for press and distribution purposes.
Ideal candidate: The ideal candidate will be passionate about the use of media by youth for empowerment, creative expression, education and activism, knowledgeable about local/global social issues and have experience working with community based organizations, preferably in the fields of community organizing, media arts or youth media. S/he should be comfortable in a collaborative, intergenerational work environment and be able to work independently and combine vision with administrative competence in a fast-paced environment.
Key Duties:
• Connect youth-made videos to ongoing social justice campaigns, artists and educators nationally and internationally and to wider audiences through web distribution, television and other independent media outlets
• Build and maintain partnerships with community-based organizations, schools, universities, organizers and other community arts groups for potential screenings, venues, youth-led workshops, filming purposes or skills share
• With program staff, actively participate in and support internal initiatives such as integrating outreach and youth leadership skills (e.g., facilitation; community networking; audience impact) into the curriculum
• Directly support youth producers in developing their facilitation skills in relation to outreaching their work
• Broaden visibility of G.A.P. through the creation of publicity materials including postcards, supplementary video materials and DVD compilation reels based on themes and other creative packaging
• Manage a youth staff member to assist with distribution
• Manage G.A.P. database of videos and resources; track outreach data for funding and reporting requirements; maintain currency of youth media work through upkeep of G.A.P. website
Salary: mid 30’s. Full benefits (medical/dental and paid vacation).
