The 21st Century Schools Program is a bold and exciting program whose primary goal is to help improve and expand the learning opportunities for students in select schools in Louisiana and Mississippi that were affected by Hurricane Katrina, one of the worst natural disasters in the history of the United States.

Cisco Systems and Digital Opportunity Trust invite technology-savvy 21-29 year olds to participate as interns in the 21st Century Schools program. Not only will you play an integral role in using technology to help transform schools and communities, but you will receive invaluable training, experience and career coaching while doing so.

Ideal interns are …
· 21 to 29 years of age
· Have successfully completed a minimum of two years of college or university
· Love technology and have some formal technology training
· Want to be actively involved in the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts

The Technology Involved…
Cisco products, including networking, connectivity, IP phones, conference facilities, bell/clock systems, and security features, will be implemented in select school districts.

Cisco is also providing grants for school districts to purchase learning technologies of their choice. Electronic white boards, multimedia learning studios and learning software are just a few examples of technologies that schools may choose to leverage to improve the quality of education and prepare students with 21st century skills.

The Role of Innovation Interns…
Young adults who are passionate and skilled in technology are the perfect bridge to support teachers to be confident and excited about technology and to create projects that will inspire students who come from the culture of technology.

Innovation Interns will go through some of the best leadership training in the country to prepare them for four areas of responsibility in the schools: support teachers’ use of technology, consult with teachers on projects that apply technology in the classroom, lead knowledge sharing activities and be a voice for the program in the community.

How the Internship Works…
· 45 Interns will be recruited between August and October 2006. The internship is a ten-month, full-time commitment. Hours are Monday to Friday 8:00 – 3:00, with vacation and training time.
· Interns will receive 160 hours of professional training through the year, daily support and career coaching. Interns will become competent in leadership, relationship building, collaboration, team building, project management and consulting, to name just a few skills.
· Interns will receive training in Cisco and instructional technologies.
· Interns will receive a 21S program certificate and a reference letter from the principal of the school they are working with for their resume.
· Interns will receive a $5,000 stipend for the year.
· Participants are welcome to hold part-time evening jobs or continue their university/college classes during evenings and on weekends.
· Placements will be as close to where participants reside as possible, or a transportation allowance will be provided if necessary. School postings will be in Petal, Lamar County, Forrest County, Hattiesburg, Harrison County and Moss Point.
· One intern will be posted for every school for the school year. Interns will be responsible for leading ‘their school’ to use new technology effectively and sharing successes and knowledge.
